Seniors are particularly vulnerable during spells of extreme heat. As temperatures climb, here are 5 simple habits to get through a heatwave with peace of mind – plus some good news, in a spirit of solidarity, if you live near one of our residences.
What exactly is a heatwave?
A heatwave means at least 3 consecutive days and nights of high temperatures (often above 31°C during the day and above 18°C at night, depending on your region).
5 tips to protect yourself
1. Drink water, even when you are not thirsty
-
At least 1.5 L a day
-
Avoid coffee, alcohol and sugary drinks (they are diuretics)
-
Eat water-rich foods: cold soups, fruit, stewed fruit
2. Avoid physical exertion
-
Do not go out during the hottest hours
-
Rest in a cool room in the afternoon
-
Wear loose, light-coloured clothing
3. Keep your home cool
-
Shutters closed during the day, cross-ventilation at night
-
Limit the use of the oven, hobs and bright lighting
4. Watch for signs of dehydration
-
Weakness, cramps, dizziness, sleeplessness
-
In older people, thirst is a late warning sign. Stay alert.
5. Light but nourishing meals
- Fruit, seasonal vegetables, chilled soups, stewed fruit
In the event of heatstroke:
-
Move the person to a cool, well-ventilated place
-
Remove any tight clothing
-
Apply cool damp cloths (forehead, back of the neck, underarms)
