In 2026, many French retirees are discovering a simple way to turn their cultural outings into low-cost trips. There is no new official pass to apply for, you simply combine three cards that already exist.

Do you dream of strolling through Aix-les-Bains, discovering Chambéry, wandering around Nevers or Yzeure, or walking along the seafront in Le Cannet and Fréjus without breaking the bank? At the moment, a TGV ticket can cost more than €80, and admission to a museum or heritage site is often between €15 and €19. In retirement, these costs can easily discourage you from enjoying the country’s heritage.

And yet there is a simple solution: the “Senior Pass 2026”. This unofficial bundle rests on three key cards, all already available to seniors.

1. The SNCF Carte Avantage Senior – 30% off your journeys

From the age of 60, for €49 a year, this card gives you 30% off TGV INOUI and Intercités trains, with capped fares (€49, €69 or €89 depending on the distance). Tip: travel on weekdays and outside the school holidays for the best prices. Ideal for reaching Aix-les-Bains, Chambéry or Nevers from the major cities.

2. The Passion Monuments membership – €49 a year

Issued by the Centre des monuments nationaux (the French national monuments authority), the Solo membership at €49 (or €78 for a Duo) gives unlimited access for one year to more than 80 sites. While towns such as Yzeure, Le Cannet and Fréjus have plenty of local treasures of their own (churches, chapels, medieval towers), this membership also covers major regional monuments that are easy to reach from these destinations.

3. Regional passes – often free or very inexpensive

Many regions offer senior passes for local transport (bus, TER regional trains, tram). In Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (for Aix-les-Bains and Chambéry), in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté (for Nevers), in Auvergne (for Yzeure) and on the Côte d’Azur (for Le Cannet and Fréjus), ask your regional council for details. Some passes are free subject to income conditions.

And completely free for some

Recipients of the ASPA (the French solidarity allowance for the elderly) are admitted free of charge to national monuments and exhibitions, on presentation of their certificate.

On top of that, there is:

  • The first Sunday of every month (free entry to several municipal museums, such as those in Chambéry and Fréjus)

  • The European Heritage Days (free entry for everyone)

Watch out for the paperwork “trap”

One important piece of advice: both SNCF and the Centre des monuments nationaux require proof of identity or a recent proof of address to validate the senior rate. Without those documents, there is no discount. Always keep them with you.

In short: with €49 a year for the train and €49 for the monuments, a senior can explore the riches of Aix-les-Bains, Chambéry, Nevers, Yzeure, Le Cannet and Fréjus for less than €100 in annual memberships. Add the right days and the available benefits, and your outings become almost free.
