The spirit of the galette des rois (the French Twelfth Night cake) arrived early this year at the OBEO residence in Aix-les-Bains, embodied by a creative and inspiring host named Claude.
This afternoon, residents and team members had the privilege of taking part in a workshop that was as original as it was festive: making kings’ crowns, guided by the expert and caring hand of this passionate craftsman.
Held at the very heart of the residence’s social life, the workshop turned the shared lounge into a genuine kingdom of creativity. On the tables, an abundance of bright, colourful materials awaited the participants: satins and velvets, sparkling beads, sequins, ribbons, gold and silver leaf. The atmosphere was both focused and joyful, filled with a gentle sense of excitement.
A moment of sharing and creativity
With remarkable patience and a real gift for teaching, Claude was able to support everyone, whatever their age or dexterity. Claude demonstrated, explained and encouraged, making the workshop far more than a simple craft session: it became a moment of shared knowledge and social connection.
Laughter and advice flew back and forth between the residents. Some hands, a little hesitant at first, quickly grew confident, carried along by Claude’s infectious enthusiasm. Conversation flowed freely, memories of galettes from years gone by mingling with plans for decorating the crowns being made. It was a real bridge between eras, where tradition met personal creativity.

As the afternoon went on, magnificent crowns took shape. Some, majestic and heavy with gilding, could have adorned the heads of illustrious monarchs. Others, more delicate and poetic, reflected the quiet personality of their maker. Each piece was a one-of-a-kind work, a reflection of its creator’s spirit.
The most magical moment was surely when everyone got to place their creation proudly on their head. Faces lit up with pride and amusement. In that instant, the OBEO residence was no longer simply a place to live; it had become a palace peopled with kind-hearted kings and queens, united by this shared experience.
A workshop whose effects will last well beyond January
Far more than a pastime, this workshop led by Claude fulfilled an essential purpose: stimulating fine motor skills, reawakening creativity, breaking the routine and, above all, creating connection.
These crowns, carefully kept, will no doubt be worn with delight at the next galette tasting, carrying with them the memory of this exceptional day.
